Wacka Tor

This does not appear on the OS 1:25000 map, the hill on which 'wacka tor' les is refered to as hickley plain, bot there is no mention of wacka tor. I know the name is in common usage but as it does not seem to be the hills official name are we sure it should appear on this list? (having said that it does appear on this website but i am not sure if this is a reliable source, especially as the ordinance survey does not recognise this tor --Greatestrowerever 16:59, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

I think a list including local/historic/oral names would be a better list than one which only includes OS names. I'm sure Crossing's Guide would list plenty of names that don't appear on the map today, also see The gazetteer of Dartmoor names Mike Brown, Forest Publishing ISBN 0951527479. Showing the equivalance of different names would seem like a good idea in that case though. On the assumption that grid refs would be helpful I'll try to start adding some. Wacka Tor is actually a collection of tors, but some of the stacks are quite respectable as tors go. It's listed in Terry Bound. Quite a lot of significant tors are missing from the OS maps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MaryFeb15 (talk • contribs) 14:49, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

The list in general It's probably not a good idea to list tors and hills, because not all tors are on hills and not all hills have tors. The following comments therefore only refer to tors.

There are an almost infinite number of 'tors' if you count significant stone masses: where do you stop? Most people think immediately of the massive granite piles which are classic tors, but a number of rocks called 'tors' are not granite. There are also many tors which are not called 'Tor'. Also many tors are actually multiple (e.g. Hayne's Down) and many which could be seen as outliers (e.g. Little Hare Tor). The most authoritative list of tors is probably Terry Bound: The A to Z of Dartmoor Tors, but even he misses out many significant rocks. I've visited virtually all his (except for a few which are on private ground or lost in Forestry Commission plantations). By my count, the current Wikipedia list misses the following, though lots of people could probably list more:

Actually in Dewerstone wood are tors too numerous to count; as on the north side of Belstone Cleave; a selection of others are respectively 595866 (near Jackman’s Bottom), 593874 (west of Okement Hill), 731898 (Fingle Cleave), 723898 (Fingle Cleave), 591795 (under Conies Down Tor), 597793 (south of Devil’s Tor), 557753 (on Merrivale Warren), 531773 (near Higher Godsworthy), 532779 (above Lower Godsworthy), 536781 (near Stephen’s Grave on Peter Tavy Great Common), 522781 (on Smeardon Down), 523780 (also on Smeardon Down), 550744 (near Longash), 549742 (also near Longash), 533746 (Barn Hill), 534746 (also Barn Hill), 585691 (south of Down Tor), 605740 (near Blackey Tor), 602613 (south of Rook Tor).

Some of these really ain't "Tors"

This list is starting to look ridiculous to me. There are an awful lot that are simply rocks or hills not "tors". Equally there is the odd one I simply don't recognise. Any thoughts from anyone? Cheers --Herby ^{talk thyme} 11:00, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
